In the language of the Luo tribe of Kenya, a string of beads worn around the waist is called “Tigo”. Waist beads have been worn by women in Africa and those of African descent since time began. They are worn for a variety of reasons - sensuality, intimacy, heritage and beauty.
Yala waist beads are available in 8 sizes and 20 vibrant colour variations, and are fastened with a screw clasp closure. They can be worn around your waist, on your hips or even lower down just above your underwear. Decide where you want yours to sit and find your size with a tape measure.
Please remember to leave yourself a little wiggle room - you should be able to easily fit your thumb between the beads and your skin. If you’re unsure, we suggest choosing a size up rather than a size down.
Anybody of any shape, size and ethnicity can wear waist beads - read our blog to learn more about them and decide how you will wear yours.
Some people love to show them off and other people keep them hidden as a little secret between them and their intimate partner. Whatever you choose, waist beads are a fun, sensual addition to your wardrobe.
These waist beads were made by the ladies at the BMB Workshop on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.
